Chongqing Daily: How can smaller restaurant businesses grow into stronger players?
Chongqing's restaurant sector has large total revenue, but many individual businesses remain small and industry concentration is relatively low.

Chongqing Daily reported on the question of how Chongqing restaurant businesses can grow from small-scale operations into stronger players. Although Chongqing's total restaurant revenue is high, the market is shared by a very large number of businesses, leaving average revenue per company relatively low.
The report explains that scale can improve purchasing power, management efficiency and marketing cost allocation. Chain operators may gain advantages that small independent shops cannot easily match, especially when online traffic and tourist demand become more important.
Talent is another constraint. Restaurant expansion requires store managers and professional operators who understand processes, quality control and local teams. Xie Kangli noted that manager capability is a major bottleneck for restaurant scale expansion, because suitable professionals require time, culture fit and operational experience.
The report also discusses training systems and internal talent development. Some restaurant groups prepare managers before opening new stores, while others rely on structured manuals and experienced staff to train newcomers.
Xie Kangli also pointed to another route: after building brand strength, restaurant companies may extend upstream into food industrialization. Compared with opening stores one by one, producing and distributing standardized food products can sometimes support broader scale with different organizational requirements.
